Change the finder appearance!

The little button in the upper right corner offers two different Finder appearances. There is more to it than just that however! The main appearance we are used to is this one:

The other one it offers is this one:

What is really cool is that you can also have these appearances by holding "Command" and clicking the same button! You have different font sizes and the choice of icons or not in the toolbar.

You have to be stupid to miss those buttons.

Hey Sean Quinn. The button is easy enough to find. The fact that it behaves differently if you "Command" click it is not obvious however. MacGeek.

It shrinks and then disappears the text labels and buttons in the menu bar.

I think you need to mention that this is not simply a cosmetic feature. What you are doing is effectively switching from a File Browser to the more old school OS 9 and earlier Finder Window. In the latter it is impossible to have two windows displaying the contents of one folder. In this set-up, clicking to open an already opened folder will focus the screen on the folder window rather than opening a second window. In the file browser format one can have two open windows that reference the same folder. Play around with the finder window and you will see what I mean. Apple included this set-up to appease some of the frustrations of those who feel the finder is fundamentally flawed. For more information do a search or Fix the Finder or Fix the F@#$ Finder in Google.
