Internet Sharing!

It is possible to set your Mac so that it shares a wired internet connection over WiFi. So it really lets you use your Mac as a wireless router. It is so useful to share wired internet over to another Mac or to an iPhone (or iPod Touch). You can enable it in the sharing section of System Preferences.

Ah, so that's how that works.

I was wondering why I couldn't use it the other way around, take my wireless internet connection and use my Mac as a wired access point. Any way I can do that, for future reference?

Sure you can do it, but beware.

OS X internet sharing only allows for WEP encryption, NO WPA or WPA2, and no MAC address filtering. So using internet sharing instead of a wireless WPA/2 router can be a bad idea as WEP can be cracked in <1 minute.

Spend a few bucks on a wireless router with real security if your signal is near public access so your internet sharing host would be much less vulnerable to attack.

@ Bingo:

To use your mac as a wired access point, select Airport from the drop down menu and Ethernet from the list.

I have no idea why it doesn't work with the iTouch. It definitely works with the iPhone. Also, it is WEP encryption only and it is true that WEP is not completely safe, but it depends what you use it for. I really only use this feature when I am traveling, so it is for very short periods of time. Of course, using a router is much better as a permanent solution.

I use this a lot with my PSP and eee pc. In fact I haven't bought a wireless router because I can just use this. Everyone says it is really easy to crack WEP but I bet they have never tried it. It's not that easy. Took me 30 minutes to crack my own WEP, so unless your next door neighbour is some one who uses linux and has the right drivers and the right tools and is looking for wireless APs to crack, you will be fine.

todd, Linux is ONLY a kernel. Applications and tools exist on every major platform for cracking. Experiments with my Mac Pro yielded WEP cracks in ~35-40 sec with enough snooped traffic.

Even Windows script kiddies can use Kane & Able to quickly defeat WEP.

I don't advocate using WEP at all anymore as it's only give a false sense of security.
