Growl notification!
Growl is a free notification system for Mac OS X. It is extremely customizable and it is compatible with many different freewares and sharewares. It incorporates very well with Mac OS X and there are many different display styles. I find it very useful because FTP transfers take a while and I always do other stuff while it is copying. With Growl, as soon as it is done, I get a notification. A kind of notification that I can't stand is an icon bouncing in the Dock. The problem with the bouncing icon is that it interrupts my workflow, because I have to switch back to this application to stop it from bouncing. The Growl notifications disappears after a few seconds so I don't have to take care of it right away, but at least I know about it instantly. I find it is mostly useful with chat and FTP applications. I use it with Adium, Chax, ForkLift, Handbrake, Skype and Transmit. Once you start paying attention to the list of application that use Growl, you'll find a lot. You can download Growl here from MacUpdate.

I would have to say that before you install the latest virgin of growl (4 Nov 2007) that you read the comments on the developer's website forum and on MacUpdate - Mil doesn't need anymore things to break it any more than it already is!
I have used growl for years but no longer...
If you don't like the bouncing icon - turn it off in rules for that mailbox and just have a sound notification - too easy...

I spent a 1/2 working day to figure that Glow was the cause of Mail crashing.
In 10.4.11, mail.app 2.1.2 (753) and Glow 1.1.2.
Have to delete the Bundles folder in Library -->Mail
@ kincas: actually Growl doesn't work with Leopard's Mail. The plugin for MAIL is named GrowMail and, I repeat, actually doesn't work with Leopard.
Not in Tiger.

My friend and I have been tearing what's left of our hair out trying to figure out why his Mail program became unstable. We got rid of the Bundles folder and it works as good as new.

I love Growl. I'm still using Tiger, and no problems at all. It's so integrated you'll forget it isn't part of OS X.
I'm a new pc to mac convert - and I love it! Question...sometimes when I shut down the macbook, the system hangs up and doesn't shut down. Can't pin it down to a particular program...sometimes doing different things. Any ideas?
Try quitting all applications first before shutting down. Also you said it was a macbook, make sure the screen goes black before you close the top. Closing the top will put the computer to sleep and not allow a full shutdown.
