The "Option" key in QuickTime!

The left and right arrows in QuickTime let you move from frame to frame. If you add the "Option" key however, it will go back to the beginning of the video. The up and down arrow adjust the sound, but with the Option key, they'll mute or turn the sound all the way up. The up and down arrow adjust the sound within QuickTime, not the system sound.

I'm looking for a shortkey to search faster trhu a movie. Arrow keys or the "<<" and ">>" keys dont go too fast. I use VLC with a shortkey for fast jumps set to the "," and "." keys, but QT is so much cooler and stylish than VLC :D

If you're into video editing, you may be familiar with the standard shuttle controls. Pressing "L" repeatedly in Quicktime Player plays the movie forward at different speeds from regular Play to fast-forward. "K" is stop, and "J" plays backwards or rewinds, although this doesn't work perfectly for many movie files.

Wow!, Thanks Anthony, that's really useful. And although I still have to press Space to get it back to normal play faster, this way there is no floating menu blocking my subtitles! Great.

By the way, do you know how to convert .mkv to .avi and if this is worthy?

BTW, if you hold your fingers on J-K-L you can rewind, stop, (fast)forward without having to move your fingers. Roll the mousewheel to move forward and back too. Some of these controls might work in other players like VLC!

Some of my favourite video tools include:
VideoSpec - for finding what you need to play a video
VLC or MPlayer OSX - To play almost anything

Converting:
MPEG Streamclip, VLC or export from Quicktime player with Perion installed.

I HIGHLY recommend installing:
Perion - perian.org - which enables QuickTime application support for additional Media Types
