Review of Mellel!

Mellel is part of the MacUpdate bundle. Mellel is being touted as the leading word processor on OS X, so I really wanted to give it a try and see for myself how good it is. At first glance, it does look pretty great. I really have to work on a project in Mellel to know if I'll use it on a daily basis, but it looks feature complete. It integrates with the bibliography application Bookends, another app included in the bundle. It also includes export to the Microsoft Word format, but not to Apple Pages. More info here on MacUpdate.

Mellel is great. I switch from Word 08 for my doctoral thesis after Word kept crashing and being buggy. Mellel never crashed after 4 months of manipulating an 80,000 word, 230 page document and working hand in hand with Bookends. Mellel gives you infinitely more control over footnotes/endnotes, headers, and cross-references. It can auto-hyphenate for you. It supports multiple languages flawlessly when working with non-Western fonts/languages. It is a little tricky to learn as it doesn't work like the Microsoft Office style of most current word processors, but once you get the hang of it it is fast, easy, and stable. It boots up in about 1 second, versus Word's 11-second launch time. Love love love it!
