Using Spotlight as a calculator!

A great tip submitted by Paul Dibben: Using Spotlight as a calculator! Starting with Leopard, it is possible to use Spotlight as a calculator. It is much quicker than loading the dashboard and using the calculator widget.

Saul, you need to use a period (.), not a comma (,). Periods are how decimals are marked in English-speaking countries.

I like using Calq, it is a very cute app and has "macish" look.

This is a great feature that also allows exponential calculations. Just type an E to place in the "x10 to the power of"

Been doing this for months. Those of you who've had basic programming experience, math class functions apply too. I.E. Square root 81 = sqrt(81); Raise 2 to the power of 3 = pow(2,3). Also type pi for the pi constant to quite a few places.

Mentioned this to my long-time Machead son who pointed out that you also get access to dictionary and thesaurus via Spotlight. Love the Mac!

I've been using this trick for as long as I've had leopard. I love it and use it about every 20 minutes. Great blog. Thanks.

Yesterday I said "cute" but, following subsequent comments from others of you, I must apologise (NZ spelling) to Apple. It aint cute, its absolutely brilliant. If you haven't explored the "Calculator" menu bar yet, after pressing [enter] or [return] try [Command-2] and [Command-3].

Can't believe I never looked at the "Calculator" menu bar before - the conversions options are great! Still looking for decimal-to-fractions of feet/inches, though.
