Using Spotlight as a Dock replacement!

Spotlight indexing feature really speeds up searches and it makes it a possible Dock replacement. It basically acts as an application launcher. The shortcut "Command-Spacebar" brings up spotlight, you can type the first few letters of the app and the app will appear in the "Top Hit" section. You can just move down with the arrows and hit "Return" to launch the app instantly.

Actually, if you hold the command key, it automatically highlights the top hit ;)

Wow... apparently you've never heard of quicksilver. Check it out. I think you'll like it. I've never used spotlight, nor the dock, after I found quicksilver.

quicksilver

this is a free application that accomplishes the same thing, but it's specifically designed to be an application launcher (among other things). It's also faster than spotlight

If you're using spotlight to find something, you can hold the Cmd key when the item is slected and press enter. By doing that, it will open the file/app/folder/whatever in finder. However, like kreamy said, right after you do a search, you can hold down the cmd key and press enter to open the top hit.

I did try Quicksilver. A liked it but I am still very pleased with the Finder performance and I find that I don't use Quicksilver that much. It still has advantages though. I am going to post soon about what I find useful about it.
