A better RSS reader!
Apple already offers pretty good RSS readers with Safari and Mail. A dedicated RSS applications can be useful and most of the time offers more features however. One that I particularly like is NetNewsWire. It really looks like a Mac application and it has that shiny iTunes look. It previously wasn't free but it is now a freeware. It has a great integration with applications such as Address Book, iCal, iPhoto and even Growl. When you find an article interesting, it will also let you load the web page directly in the application. It even supports tabbed browsing. You can learn more or download NetNewsWire here from MacUpdate.

Google Reader is also very good. It has a lot of tools, like sharing news among groups; embed news in your webiste; etc. And it gives you a lot of stats, as the number of news you receive and/or read per day of week or per time in a day, etc.
Actually, NewsGator is pretty darn good and looks great on an iPhone if you happen to have one.
I used to use Google Reader exclusively. I had already purchased NetNewsWire before they changed to giving it away for free. It was OK, but I mostly read RSS feeds from several locations and needed a web based reader.
Now, I still read feeds all over, but thanks to NNW and NewsGator keeping each other sync'ed so that I only read a story once, I use my iPhone for reading any other place than my Mac and use NNW for when I am home behind my Mac.
I would say that NNW/NewsGator is good competitor to Google Reader. Plus you can't beat the free price tag for a program that is really well written.
Question: I currently use Mail for my RSS feeds, but every time an author corrects a typo, etc., it pops it right back in my RSS folder. So I get the same stories over and over. There aren't any rules to automatically delete the RSS feeds, either, because "Updated!" is a tag and not part of the title... Any ideas? Can one of these programs do that?
Thanks!
@todd: NNW recognizes updated postings. You can choose to a) mark updated items as unread or b) highlight the differences. Option a) works pretty well for me.
NNW is MUCH better. Thanks!
Has anyone tried NewsFire? Is so, do you think it's better than NetNewsWire?
NewsFire is different, but it's a pretty good desktop app too. Now that it's free, it's certainly worth a download to check it out...
