Alphabetizing Safari's bookmarks!

A great tip submitted by Barbara MacLeod (tip from macosxhints.com): Alphabetizing Safari's bookmarks! The bookmarks menu and folders can get pretty messy with time and sometimes, it would just look better in alphabetical order. There is no option for that included with Safari, but there is something you can do to easily solve that issue. So you simply have to go to the bookmarks management (click on the little open book at the left of the bookmark bar. Then, you can drag a folder of bookmarks to a new folder in the Finder. Sort the bookmarks by name and you are ready to drag them back to Safari. For the bookmarks to stay in alphabetical order, you cannot drag a list of bookmarks but a folder containing those bookmarks. The bookmarks will now be sorted in alphabetical order. You might end up with a duplicate folder, but it is easy to get rid of that duplicate. Thanks Barbara for the great tip!

Better than manual is a simple inexpensive shareware that is lightening fast. Not only a great app but each update is better and free. The app is Bookdog.

Guess I'm missing something. I've just been dragging items into any order I want. How is this tip less trouble?

If you have a few bookmarks, dragging them around is easy, but if you have fifty bookmarks and you want them in alphabetical order, this way is much quicker.

The way I managed to do it is as follows:
Open the bookmark folder list in Safari.
When the bookmark folder of interest has been "ordered", as recommended, in Finder, drag it to the "bookmark management" icon on Safari; the "ordered" folder will appear as a "tab" on the bar below the "book management" icon; then drag the "ordered" folder into the main bookmark folder list and, if necessary, delete the original.

Hmm...I could not select more than 1 folder to drag into the new folder to sort it.

How do you actually aphabetize your whole Safari list of bookmarks/folders (more easily than singly dragging each and every new folder) ?

BookDog works great - and I was glad to pay the shareware $14.95 to use it for 2 yrs. Today i realize that has expired though -- and i'm not really keen on yet again investing in an eventually expiring Bookdog renewal fee again.

What i'm really confused about is why Safari itself doesn't simply add this very logical and useful feature??

This is so typical. I think people who like Apple's drink some special kind of Kool-Aid or have clothes pins on their noses. I can't wait to wear out my MacBook so I can get back to a real computer.
